As an interior designer, you will need plenty of creativity to help you come up with practical and aesthetically-pleasing designs to satisfy your clients’ expectations.

  1. Communication and project management skills

You will need to be able to communicate effectively with clients, as well as with the other people involved in the interior design process. Interior designers are required to work closely with architects, building contractors, electricians, plumbers, interior decorators and other service providers.

They are also required to supervise interior design projects on-site – this means that you will need sound project management skills as well.

  1. Numerical skills

You will need to be good at working with numbers, as numerical skills are essential for performing calculations relating to the technical aspects (e.g. taking accurate measurements and working out the sizes and quantities of materials to be used), as well as for drawing up the budgets for interior design projects.

  1. Attention to detail

Attention to detail is an important aspect of interior design, as even a small mistake can lead to the failure of an entire project.

To avoid penalties, for example, you need to make sure that your designs are fully compliant with the local building regulations. You also need to make sure that you have fulfilled every aspect of your client’s brief in accordance with your service contract, else your client may withhold payment or sue for breach of contract.
