So Black Friday has come and gone and there are no more specials, right? Wrong. There is still Cyber Monday. You may have heard the name before but you’re not quite sure what it means. How does Cyber Monday work? What’s the big deal? Fortunately for you, we are here to tell you everything you need to know.
What is Cyber Monday?
Cyber Monday is a term that was first used in 2005 to describe the Monday after Thanksgiving. It is similar to Black Friday but with the focus being on online shopping. Many companies extend their Black Friday specials to online deals on Cyber Monday and some companies have new specials which are only available online.
How did Cyber Monday Start?
The first “Cyber Monday” was created by 1800flowers.com in 2003. It was the day before Thanksgiving and was called “White Wednesday”.
Cyber Monday began when many stores noticed that their sales increased on the Monday after Thanksgiving, especially online sales, making them offer more specials on that day to increase sales even further.
In 2005, home internet connections were generally not as fast as the connections available at work. Research showed that many people would get to work after the Thanksgiving weekend and go online to buy the things that they had seen while window shopping over the weekend.
When is Cyber Monday?
As you know, Thanksgiving is on the last Thursday of November so Cyber Monday is always four days after Thanksgiving and three days after Black Friday. Cyber Monday usually falls between 26 November and 2 December.
For the next five years the date for Cyber Monday is as follows:
- Cyber Monday 2018: 26 November
- Cyber Monday 2019: 2 December
- Cyber Monday 2020: 30 November
- Cyber Monday 2021: 29 November
- Cyber Monday 2022: 28 November
